Picked up a jd 400 industrail model yesterday. I've got to clean it up and asses leaks on hydraulic hoses and cylinders but I think it will be a good tractor. Gas burner, loader, power steering, 3 point hitch and pto. Standard transmission with two levers (P, I, II, R) and 1-4(5-8). Dont have the manuals yet abd have a question about the clutch pedal. It doesnt catch until the pedal is almost straight up and down. Is this normal for a JD?

Does clutch pedal have any free travel?

If your tractor is below SN <045200 it has open center power steering powered by a pump mounted on RH frt of engine. The remainder of hyd's is closed center. If you change hyd oil I suggest to check/clean suction screen(key 30)

To go along with Tx Jim's info. If your 400 has the two stage clutch (and is similar to the Ag tractors of that vintage), when the pedal is set for the PTO clutch operation which does make it higher at the top end. It should still have free play, but the pedal may seem higher than it needs to be, at least my experience. Tx Jim can correct me if I'm wrong. Your John Deere manual (hope you are getting JD manual(s) or good reprints of them) when you get them should give you the entire adjustment procedure.

Thanks for the tips. Its serial number is 146663T. I had a chance to clean it up this afternoon. I cleaned the suction screen. Two hydraulic cylinders leak at the seals, pto seal leaks, and there is a high pitched noise by my right foot. Sounds like a pump. It goes away when the loader or 3 point lift is moved. Hydraulics work fine on pto, loader, brakes, and steering. Hardly no free play on the clutch. Maybe 1/2 inch. Thanks again.

Normal compared to mine, a little
unnerving at first but I got used to it.
Mine is a TLB still patching leaks. The
gasket between the clutch housing and
transmission seeps so it's gonna take some
effort to put the new gasket in.
