So let me ask you guys this . All
three are the same price D, Gp ,
and 420 . None run all three are
loose . I'm leaning towards the gp
but finding parts may run the $$$
up quickly. I know 420 parts
should be easier to find , maybe D
parts easier to find too ? Yes I
know but the one you want , but if
I buy the gp do you think I'll be
wishing I got one of the other
ones later on when I'm trying to
fing parts made of unobtainium (
hard to find and expensive ) ? Let
me know what you think guys ,
thanks

Your location, your budget, and what shall the Tractor be ultimately used for?

I own several "Ds".......useless for the garden work.....great for pulling in my field.....eats so much fuel I need a second income....manual steering.....NOT a THREE POINT HITCH Tractor.......:)

Consider the implements you shall be requiring...........?

What exactly shall your Tractor be required to do....?

I like the "D" when used in the annual farm day vintage equipment...show...

I have no experience with the GP or 420........

I finally purchased a JD 520...........:) as the 520 fills my Tractor requirements..

Bob..

It won't be used for any work just parade and show . I have several tractors already just looking for a project ( and to add to my collection ) .

Parts for all 3 are easy to find. I like the GP's. Parts aren't that expensive.

Are parts like block and head easy to find ? It's loose but I don't know if it may have a cracked block or head . I just got done putting together my father-in-laws unstyled b he bought pulled the head of found three cracks then looked at the block and found a crack in water jacket also . I know it's a roll of the dice and that's the chance you take. You think I'll be able to find any reasonably priced to parts I would need ?

Most GP's I've seen with cracked blocks are on the right side of the block. Heads will crack around the rim of the spark plug. Both can be welded very easy. New Paris Tractor Parts in Indiana have parts as well as several collectors on the John Deere GP "General Purpose" page on Facebook. If it's loose it sounds like a very easy one to get running. Small bore or Big Bore?

I'd take the 420. Small, light, easy to haul around, easy on fuel. I've had a couple of D's and found them more work than I got pleasure out of. I now have a 420 and 4 430's. They always seem to start with minimal maintenance and if I want to drive it around the yard, they don't leave a footprint.Tires are less expensive also.

what year of d? there was several changes made during the long production run
condition of tires on the tractors?
and as any tractors that old , maybe chose the one in best overall condition

Not sure year of the D it is styled , all the tires are old could use new tires on all of the tractors. I think condition is about the same on all of them complete none running but all loose . Sitting inside so not out in the weather but old paint that would need to be redone.

All true , maybe I need to talk the wife into letting me get two of them . Maybe I'll tell her I'm getting the 420 and I need the gp as a parts tractor to get the 420 running ........shhhh don't tell her none of the parts will fit

If you really want to fit in well on this forum, buy all 3 then you will just have to decide which to fix up first!!

420 slant steer with 5 speed and live PTO. forget about the others . The 420 can always be used to pay it's way in useful service .
Any options on the 420 ? Which chassis ?

It's wide front , missing three
point , I think I'll get the 420
and the gp both ( always nice to
have a project around )

John Deere still has quite a few parts for a 420 don’t know about the others . I have a 420 so I’d get the d

Wide front doesnt us anything . Is it a U, S,
W, T , V or H ?
Single or dual rock shaft ? Live PTO ? 4 speed or 5 speed ? SCV ? Power Steering ? Fender options . Swept back front axle ? Float ride seat ? Hour meter ? Tach ?

For my small farm to use I would buy the 420. I have a 40U (almost a 420 but a bit older) and it is as handy as the MT I had before but has 3 pt hitch and is much easier to get on and off. It can plow dirt (2 bottom), snowblow (4 foot), run a mower (4 foot), pull wagons, cultivate, harrow - you name it. If you get the 420 get yourself a cheap set of forks for the 3 pt hitch. I almost always have the forks on there and use them constantly for all sorts of things. If you have any amount of property to take care of the 420 will be handy to have.

That being said I NEED to own a GP or a D at some point. I love the sound and look of both of them especially when on full steel. They are just awesome machines.
