JD 2010 Gas

Hello, I have a 2010 JD---not sure the year. How do i find the Year" I bought it about a year ago and it would run but needed a water pump. I'm just now getting around to work on it. I have 3 current issues and would appreciate any help. 1. I turn the key on and it will try to crank. i turn the key off and back on nothing. battery is good, cables seem good. i cked wires to the starter--maybe the switch? 2. i have several wires (example -wire from the coil goes where-- maybe to the alternator?) there are like 3 more wires that lost their home. I have no wires going to the alternator and dont know which one goes where. i did google a wire diagram but I'm not technical enough to follow it 3. i cleaned the gas tank, bowl, carburetor and put a new chock cable on it but still no starting--i wonder if one of the wires that is not connected may be the problem. i haven't checked yet if fire is getting to the plugs. i did take the distributor cap off and made sure it had clean contacts. BTW--it did run pretty good when i parked it--the only thing i remember when i parked it --that it leaked hydraulic fluid and the leaver to accelerate didnt seem to give a lot of gas power. thanks for any help --mark

2010 serial tag is on engine. 2010 came from factory with a generator not alternater so a factory wiring diagram for charging system will be of very little assistance. I suggest to check operation of neutral start switch & clean/tighten all 4 battery cable connections

To go along with Tx Jim's advice.

I am guess you don't have a service manual. Click this link to go to one on line you can download and save, it may help you. https://archive.org/details/John_Deere_2000_Series_Tractor_Technical_Service_Manual_/mode/2up

If it was running good when you parked it, and nothing had been touched since then, the points may have oxidized from setting and just needed to be cleaned. Checking for spark should have been the first thing when it didn't start.

You may have a bad switch(es), or some shorted wires. If the ignition switch acted right and didn't keep cranking after that first try, the switch may be sticking from setting and should be replaced.

Some basics.
Do you have a test light, or better yet a voltmeter, to check with?
You need power to the ignition switch.
There should be a wire from the start terminal of the switch to the safety start switch and one to the solenoid/starter from the safety switch.
There should be a wire from the ignition switch to the coil (or ballast resistor ahead of the coil if it has one). One wire from the other small terminal of the coil to the distributor. No wire from the coil to the alternator.
As for the alternator people will need to know what alternator you have to help you figure out the wiring it needs. As Tx Jim posted there is nothing in a 2010 wiring diagram to help you with that. Post a picture, that may help ID it.

Thanks for the replies. On the engine it reads--16277T so I think it might be a 1961 year model---A good year--my birth year. i will follow the threads ya'll sent and get back with you. That is good to know about the Generator/alternator. I noticed that the alternator didn't look like it fit perfectly. i didn't know it originally came with a generator. The reason i haven't explored the firing more in detail is because i have the radiator off now to install the water pump. I will
re-check all the cables and switch and points. I do have an extensive amount of manuals for this tractor--I just can't locate them. thanks again--i really appreciate your time in replying.

Jim, thanks for your help and manual --I'm not sure what the safety start switch is? there is a wire from the coil to the distributor the other wire from the coil is not connected to anything. Also what is a ballast resistor (is that the white thing connected to the body that has like two prong on it? thanks again mark
