4020 Powershift Test Drive - What to Look For???

When looking at a 4020 with powershift transmission, what what should one look for when giving it a test drive to have some
comfort level the transmission is OK. Is there any certain way to drive it to check the powershift? I know what to do when
test driving an IH with a TA, but really know nothing about the 4020's.

Anything else particular to the 4020 I should be on the look-out for when looking one over and giving it a test drive?

Any sage advice is much appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

I would get a set of gauges and put them on the Clutches and Brakes test port, that will tell the story on the transmission. I rebuilt my 4020 Powershift 5 years ago, owned it since 1970 and it was the first time that it was touched.

If on the "farm" look around and see if they have any JD Hy-Gard hyd. oil around. If they have TSC or Rural king just LEAVE !

If you care, see if the PTO shaft stops turning when lever is disengaged. Mine does not but I rarely use the PTO so don't care. It will stop under load.

It's always a guess when you test drive,,but #1 is will the Pto start and stop...if it don't stop I would walk away,, #2 let it warm up a bit and start out in first gear, with some brake applyed,,shift slowly up through the gears to see if it stalls out and stops,, there will be a bit of a hesitation and jump in the 6 to 7 shift.

I can not email you this information as well

Thanks for the replies and manual pics! Turns out this 4020 is a side console syncro.

I have some questions regarding that version of the 4020, but will start another thread specific to it.

Thanks again!
