John Deere A head and block

I do not think that is a direct bolt in. But I'm also thinking some of the tractor pullers have done it. Were you looking for a power boost ?
The correct parts for the 1944 A should be easy to find. You might be able to sell the 1948 parts for more than the older parts would cost.
The cyl. heads would be near the same except the older one is thicker. You can see it in the combustion area too.

Hi,

The 48 tractor is for parts. I had the head and block for the 44 but they needed work at the machine shop, and years went by and I never got them, so now they are probably junked. I think heads are easier to find but wondering about the block since i had a spare. Thanks.

As Mike said, get the correct parts. There are 6 bolts that bolt the block to the crankcase. TWO of them are the same from the 1948 block to the 1944 block. The 1944 block will have 4 bolt holes in the bottom and 2 on the side for bolts to go thru the frame, the 1948 block does not have any of these. You would also have to tap the oil hole in the back of the late block 1/4 NPT to hook up the oil line to feed the top end. The head will work, use the head studs from the late block (they are shorter). If you use the late head, use the oil feed washer that goes on the center head stud that was on that head. That part may or may not be different from your early one, depending on which late A head you have. The pushrods will needed shortened up as well.
