Power Block in a 70 gas

Hi all. I'm a little new to the site for posting but I have gotten great amounts of info from here before. I have a 1954 70 gas and I'm in the middle of over hauling it/ restoring it. I bought it 5 years ago thinking I'd get to it but I'm just now getting to it. I thought I knew what I had till I took the head off. And after some research it turns out I have a power block in my 70. My question to you guys is, well a few. For one I haven't taken the pistons out yet so I'm not sure what they are like for them or the rings. But I haven't found any place one where to find parts for one. For 2, would I be better off looking for an original block and get pistons and such for that than trying to put money into the power block. I haven't ever heard anything about power blocks till I started trying to figure out what I had! I guess any information would be helpful! Thanks

A machine shop can get rings for that block. The pistons need to be pulled out the bottom of the block. They will not come out the top. There are people making new oversized pistons for that block. Somebody on this forum will probably speak up with that information. If you want to go back to an original block, what you have is quite valuable and would help pay for the rebuild. I sold a 50 power block with no pistons and paid for gaskets and new oversized pistons for my 50.

You can get parts for the Power Block stock 70 gaskets from dealer or after market, Hastings will have your rings for one example. If you decide you want to go back to stock I have a standard bore block (needs pistons) out of a 55 JD 70.

Back in the early '70s I happened to be at TSC
in Davenport & they had a new power block with
pistons for a 70 sitting on the floor.

Price was $75. I had just overhauled the 70 with
.045 pistons & rings, so never bought it.
Dumb-de-dumb dumb.

Does anyone know if having the power block get a little better fuel economy at all verses the original block? I'm not gonna use the tractor for tractor pulls but pulling a baler or hay rack or other odd and ends on the farm. :)

Depends on how you measure fuel efficiency?
How hours a year to of operation and you are hoping to save how much ?
