2-53 Detroit Diesel

This there any unusual problems taking a 2-53 engine out of a 435 tractor and putting it in a 440 crawler? I think it should be a pretty straight swap, but there are often so many variations in these tractors and engines one doesn't really know unless they've done it. The engine out of the 440 will be rebuilt and installed in the 435 eventually.

Thanks,

Mark

You don't say, is the 440 diesel now or gas? If diesel to diesel it should swap within reason, I would believe. If you are looking at diesel to gas I believe there are more differences than just the engines. If it is gas based on discussions on the jdcrawlers site. Depending on serial number some of the 440IC drive trains are lighter than the 440ICD drive train. Controls, hydraulic pumps, radiator, fuel tank, and other accessories may be different.

I think it should be just a matter of swapping the crawler accessories, that are different than the wheel tractors over, since both are the 2-53 diesel.

There are several updates issued by GM to make the 2-53 start and operate much better and more reliably than the original S series used in the 440 and 435.

N series pistons/sleeves, N series cam follower springs and N series valve springs, C series injectors up to C50 and the upgraded blower drive shaft end/housing seal.
Do not sink the valves and loose compression.
Replace all shaft bearings/bushings in the block.
A 3-53 oil pump will maintain oil pressure at idle.
Use spray cooling rods if going to C45 or C50 injectors.

I would think you may just have to swap the front engine mont and maybe a few other things but I?ve never done it
