3020 recommendations

I am in the market to buy a 3020 and I don't want to spend more than $5000. I found this gas model serial no. 112829 that I will be going to look at. It has syncro transmission and 540/1000 pto and 7000 hours, and narrow front end, 15.5 x 38 rears. The owner says it runs good, no smoke, good oil pressure. Are these gas 3020s a good tractor, or should I look for something different. He only wants $4500 for it, which means I can probably get it for $4000.

I bought a gas, narrow front 3020 synchro with a loader for $3200 a couple years ago. Sold the loader so I only had $1800 in the tractor. About $3,000 later, I had it repainted and running good, leaks fixed, electronic ignition, etc. It is a good tractor for some things, but uses too much gas to rake hay. I use it on my sweetcorn planter. But it will run the moco and round baler as well. But of course I wish it was a diesel. I would price mine at 6,000 and probably would settle for 5000 if someone showed me the cash.

In your price range you are going to have to get a gas. Try to find a tractor with a zenith carb. as they are much better than the Marvels. The zenith is a cast iron carb and the marvel looks like it is made out of white metal. While a gas 3020 will never be as good as a diesel it is still a very usable tractor that is capable of doing lots of work. I changed my neighbors 3020 to electronic ignition and it runs very good and starts good in cold weather. I have a 3020 utility gas that we use some. $5000 should buy you a very nice wide front 3020 gas. If you need a zenith carb they cost around $500 for used ones. If you do not need that big a tractor I feel a 2510 gas is a better running tractor. They are 54 hp and will cost the same as a 3020 gas. Tom

Agreed that with your budget, unless you are game for a rough 3020 diesel, a gasser will be your most realistic option. IF the 3020 you reference is as advertised, $4,000 would be a decent buy for you.

Actually, even though the 3020 is rated more power than a 2510, I have had both, still have the 2510, There is hardly any difference in what they will do. I have plowed with both tractors in the same field with the same type plow, and the 2510 would stay with the 3020. The 2510 is a newer design and is a better tractor. There was an article a few years ago in Green Magazine about the 2510, explaining the differences in it and the older 4 cylinders.
