Transmission Oil for A and 70

I recently changed all the fluids in my 1952 model 60, which is the descendent of the model A . There are many posts on this forum and some lively discussion as to which fluids are appropriate for your application. Has to do with whether newer formulations are "yellow metal friendly", regarding brass and other softer components in the drive train. I found such a fluid at my local Car Quest.

Randy,
I usually split the difference and use a blend. Around here we can get 90/140. It's a good compromise. Sometimes 80/90 gets a little thin in the summer and the gear noise is more noticeable. Good Luck!

50wt motor oil is about the same viscosity as sae 90 gear oil. Doesn’t stink, is yellow metal friendly and a better quality than GL-1.

Motor oil does not ruin the live pto clutch disks if the 70 has live pto and the shaft seals are leaking transmission oil into the pto clutch.

Depending on the year model and serial number of your Model A tractor, there are two different oil weights recommended and two different quantities.
