1948 john deere A

At the tractor show today I put the tractor on the dyno with the pto. She got up to 33 horsepower. Im still.figuring out this tractor. Only had ot for a year. I know the horsepower should be closer to 38. Any ideas to why it is low? If anyone has amy?ideas i could.mess.with it amd throw it back on the dyno and see what happens? Thanks

First thing I always check is throttle and governor linkage. Then check timing and fuel mixture. Make sure the air cleaner isn't restricting flow.

That's about right a gas A is around 35 and a G is 38 for a stock one that was new. 69 years old it may be down on power just a little.

Make sure the RPM is set to the fast idle speed and not the load speed with NO LOAD on it. It really makes a huge difference.

How do you check the rpm for fast idle speed? Sorry i dont understand what you mean by this.

There is a bolt and jam nut on the steering column right below the radiator shutter lever. This bolt when loosened so that more thread is exposed will restrict the forward motion of the speed control lever and thus reduce your max rpms. To measure rpms, I like to use a tachometer on the pulley clutch. With speed control lever wide open or forward till it hits the stop bolt, your fast idle rpms should be about 1115 I think (at least that's the rpm for my 60--the successor to the A).

On my '52 A, the book says 1080 max idle speed. I checked it with a Stewart-Warner shaft
tach, exactly 1080.
