model 40 tractor mower

Hey Guys,
Just found an old John Deere 40 tractor in a barn with a side mount sickle bar mower. The tag is pretty beat up so I can't read the model. It's definitely a John Deere and I see the serial # but no Model.

Thanks Mark. I'm thinking there can't be to many of these mowers out there if they only fit the 40. I've seen lots of rear mounts but this is the first side mount I've run across.

The 20 mower also fit the MT tractors and I think 420and 430. They were a side mount mower for Dubuque tractors.

(quoted from post at 14:52:51 07/23/17) Mower was probably made by Detroit Harvester.

The M20 and M20A were made by Deere. The MI-7 was made by Detroit Harvester Works and was made for the MI....

I do not know if the M20 and M20A would work on a 40 as the M20 and M20A drive lines were mounted off of the power lift and the 40 had a 3-point. There may of been an adapter to mount it on to a 40 or Deere may of re-badged it as a different model.

I know my M20 A will not fit on a 40 with out modifications to the drive line mounting.

Also, the M20 and the M20A were made for both the M and the MT. The only difference is that on the MT there were brackets that were needed to lower the complete unit down so the cutter bar would acheive a full stroke.

Hay Maker,
I did find a serial # tag. It's pretty beat up. I can make out a 20 but the preceding letter is destroyed. I'm guessing it's an M20. The three point hitch is removed to install the mounting and the drive off the PTO. It certainly looks unique to the 40 standard.
Thanks, John
