JD 4440 pressure control valve leak

Hello all I have a leak from the adapter/elbow fitting on the pressure control valve on the rockshaft housing on my 1982 4440 quad range.

I have the service manual but have a couple questions:

1. What does this thing do- just a pressure limiter to the rockshaft? I though the whole system ran 22-2300psi not sure what this valve is for.

2. There is kind of a "hammering" or "tic" noise you can easily hear and feel coming from the hydraulic line going to the pressure control valve fitting. Is that normal?

3. I was just going to replace the adapter/elbow fitting to stop the leak, but shoukd the valve be replaced while Im in there? How woukd I know if it is not working correctly?

Thanks for the help, my first iron horse tractor...i dont know how this thing works as well I should...

The pressure control valve that you're referring to ensures that brakes & power steering have the last amount of hyd pressure. IIRC pressure control valve closes at 1700 psi blocking off hyd pressure to rockshaft & scv's

hello, these elbow fittings leak after many hours & many pulses of the steel line, so just replace the fitting.
then you should check the line for a loose or missing hold down at the front end of this section of line,, just
below the RH battery. if this mount is loose it will let the line pulsate a lot more than normal & eventually
crack your line also..

Thank both of you gentlemen. Ill replace that elbow and check the hold down.

I guess the noise is ok everything is working...

When you unscrew the pcv elbow...be sure and have a bucket/tub under it to catch the oil..and the valve and spring that will fall in the bucket....
