OK, I said the last post was the last one.. wrong!

Replacing clutch facings in my 1950 A (SN 666598)

Got the two new facing discs and starting to replace. But I JUST realized something while I was putting things back into the clutch!

When I pulled the clutch apart, there were two very smooth discs (outer and inner). Then when I looked at the order of replacement to put the parts back in, I noticed a third disc stuck to one of the surfaces of the Facing Disc (Part # AD752R)-- it has three "ears that go over the bolts--and the stuck disc came off of it easily but there was not one on the other side). Looking further, I see in my parts Catalog that the Facing Disk (part AD752R--corresponds to the SN the tractor SN that I have), says "Disk, clutch facing with linings". Does that mean that there should have been 4 identical discs when I took it apart? And one on EACH side of the clutch facing disk? Since there were three but also a lot of debris inside the clutch when I pulled the dust cover, does that mean that the 4th one was ground up?

It seems logical (to me, maybe noone else!!) that there should be a disc on each side of the Sliding Disk Drive, and another between the Clutch facing disk (AD752R) and the smooth surface of the Fixed clutch disk drive, and then another behind the Fixed clutch disk drive. That would mean that there would not be smooth metal on smooth metal anywhere.

If my logic is correct I need two more Clutch Facings? part C614R. And if so, are all 4 interchangeable? Or since the three that came out (used) are all intact except smooth, can they be used as the linings of the Clutch Facing Disk (AD752R).

Hope this all makes sense!

Any advice is appreciated!

THANKS AGAIN!!

There are 2 floating disks in there C614R sounds like the correct old part number. One behind the clutch driver disk and one in the outer cover plate. Then there is a metal plate with 3 holes where it slides over the bolts that IS to have lining bonded or riveted (old style) to it. This goes in the middle. Up against the clutch driver disk outside and then a smooth metal plate with the internal splines slides on up against it. Then that cover plate with the other floating disk goes on last.
So 2 of the same floating disks and one metal plate with facings stuck onto both sides of it is what all goes in there.

THANKS MIKE!! It seems that I need to replace that three-holed piece with the bound linings. Is that correct!! Best LEN

Item # 6 are the 2 floating disks, item # 8 is the one you are asking about. Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks. That is the part (#8) that I was concerned about. The one that I have has no discs on either side, but there were two that came out when I took the clutch apart that were free and other than being shiny smooth are not damaged. The CLutch Facing Disk that I have does not have any rivet holes or other visible ways that those discs could have been attached. so my question is whether I can use the ones that we in it without attaching them and if I need to attach, how?

The last clutch I replaced was on a B and it did not have the (#*) part.

THANKS TO ALL!!

Part # 8 comes with the fiber disks bonded to it now. Replace the whole item. You can get them from Deere, or from places like Stieners, or probably from this site. Look under tractor parts.

If you look under John Deere tractor parts on this site, look for "60" clutch parts. They are identical to late "A". They don't list #8 with A clutch parts, as the older A did not have them. Later more power tractors needed more disks in the clutch.

PERFECT!!! I think that is the answer! But why was the #8 part in there with two loose discs? Did the former owner try to shim them in?

Anyway, THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The adhesive that bonded them to the center must have let loose. With the parts diagram, you should be good to go.
