JD Gyro Mower Clutch

Mowing yesterday in heavy rag weed patch, I noticed my Gyro mower clutch was slipping and had grease being slung out from the discs and the clutch was really hot!
I put the mower away and tightened the clutch big nut with a hammer and punch and greased the grease fitting. What is the purpose of the grease here anyway?
What is the adjustments procedure? Do you just tighten the big nut as tight as possible or is there a spec for that?
It appears that there is now grease on the clutch disc and I wonder if that is bad?
I really like this mower and have used it for several years with no problems. Have I ruined it? Wish I knew how it is designed to work!

That grease fitting is to lube the shaft where the hub can spin on the shaft when it's slipping, it don't need much grease there, when your clutch warmed up from slipping it thinned the grease down and let it into your clutches, you probably should take the clutch down and clean and check it,, there is a wrench for that clutch nut and you can make your own by cutting and shaping a piece of metal to fit..

Thanks for the info. I wonder how tight you are supposed to make the nut adjustment? Is there a spec on that or do you just make it tight as you need to cut?

It varys from one to the other, the best way is to firm it up and make it slip a bit then tighten a bit more, it can only do it's job if it can slip when it needs too, the spring disc can break or get weak from heat and change things too..

In order to remove it, it looks like there are 4 bolts at the u joint end and I guess it just slips off the output shaft from the gear box. Is it that easy?
Then I could remove the discs and clean the grease off them perhaps.
