Grease inside bellhousing on 4010

We are getting ready to put the motor back in my son's 4010. The clutch was replaced right before he got it and it looks good and is dry but the bellhousing inside is covered with what looks like grease. We are putting a new main seal in the motor. I think the grease in the bellhousing is from the throw out bearings but not sure. Can any seals for the clutch shaft or pto shaft be replaced from this end or will it need split at the back of the bell housing.

From where you are at, you can replace seal Key # 33, Part # AR26481, that seals between the PTO shaft and the clutch shaft.

(Key #'s 36 and 37 are used "less PTO".)

(quoted from post at 19:49:12 05/02/16) You should also replace the rear engine seal while there.

Thanks for the replies

We were already planning on replacing the engine seal. Is it likely that this is actually grease from the throw out bearings or possibly transmission oil mixed with clutch dust. The clutch is dry. Wouldn't the clutch get oil on it if the clutch shaft seal was leaking oil

hello,, the throwout brg. you get from the JD dealer does NOT have a notch on the ID like the original, UNLESS someone was smart enough to ask for the old original part. when the NEW brg. is put in you are supposed to remove the grease fitting as ALL of the grease pushes out into the clutch housing, none goes into the throwout brg. remove the brg. you have to determine if the inside diameter has a notch cutout,, IF,, so you need to line up the notch with the grease fitting so it will take grease. KEEP the grease fitting in the PTO thrust bearing.

I will have to look at it a little closer tomorrow. I did notice that it does have a grease fitting but it is pointing straight up. Shouldn't it be pointing down so you could grease it through the inspection cover.
