8 volt batteriesa

can I put two 8 volt batteries in a 4430 instead of the two six volts for fast cold weather starting. Will the alternator pick up the pace with this set up.

I don't know of any alternator that's adjustable really, the 8 volt batteries are intended to be used with a 6 volt generator system and you adjust the voltage regulator to charge higher, I believe around 9 or 10 volts.

(quoted from post at 21:31:26 05/01/16) 2 12V batteries in parallel would seem more prudent.

Ditto what David stated. My 4255 & all 55 series came from factory with two 12 volt batteries and it starts very well especially in Texas winters.

That would be treating the symptoms instead of curing the cause.
The 8V would not have the CCA of a decent 6V or 12V.
Dozens of past posts here about block heaters, pump de-strokers, failing cables and relocating the "ground" or chassis return connection. Pump may need the advance bumped up a wee bit to compensate for wear.
And the most important test that nobody and I mean nobody will perform because that multimeter is more dangerous and likely to bite than a irritated rattle snake. Measure the voltage between the starter's cast body and the starter solenoid's main threaded post WHILE cranking. I'll be a six pack of brew that the starter voltage under load is several volts low.

Nobody uses a DVOM????Right after opening my eyes to do a visual inspection its the first tool to come out for electrical diagnostics.
Generalizing will get you into problems Glen
As far as the mans issue, I would recommend new cables, GOOD batteries (stay with 6v, why reinvent the wheel?), CLEAN connections and my favourite, the hyd pump destroking screw.
Remember the tractor is 40+ years old a little maintenence will pay off.
Thousands of them start every day still.

Have always used two twelves (Group 31).
You usually need cables anyway.
Order them for 50/55 series tractors.

In 12+ years of asking that question. There has only been one answer and the the dude measured the voltage with everything shut off.
After asking the voltage question the post still goes on with random replacement of parts and questions that have already been answered.
