Split John Deere A

I need to split my JD model A to replace differential bearings. Can I leave rear axle and wheels on and split between tranny and rear axle housing as an assembly? That way I am hopin it could roll back away . I think I will have to block under tranny of course and have a floor jack under the front of the rear end housing to roll it away. How do you guys suggest?

It will separate there easily, just keep the halves supported/lined up so as not to damage the PTO shaft (if so equipped) and that has to line up at the splines when you go back together.

I split my 50 there to replace the leaky gasket. I blocked the rear and rolled the front end away. I used the stand I use for the 4020's with a little modification to keep the front upright. Made me nervous as the 50 is rollamatic.

Ok, I got it. I will block unDer the drawbar and under the front part of the rear end housing. The support the tranny from overhead sling. Split it and roll front forward and away from Rear end housing. .. thanks guys. I will take some pics and update/ ask as I go along. Be next weekend before I get it all gathered up. Thanks again.

I understand what you.mean about the stand for the front half now that I think it through.. I will have to think about how I am going to get that done?

Yeah watch it close we had the front end of a B fall over years ago. make sure you support it good so no one will get hurt.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I am thinking I could bolt some steel legs to the side of the tractor . These 2 legs would be welded to 4" square tubing about 4' long under running perpendicular to tractor. Have some sort of dolly wheels under the ends. The pic shows the spot I would bolt the 2 legs. The area with the 3 holes under the block.

here's the way I split my 48A. I blocked up front end with 6x6 just behind front wheel. took a piece of 6* channel iron, about 4 feet long, drilled holes to match starter cover holes so that channel was perpendicular to tractor and blocked undereach end of iron. I then made this frame work from 2" angle and bolted to axel. weight of powertrol keeps axel from tipping when you roll axel back. worked real slick with no problems lining anything back up. Hope this helps
