Recently Purchased 1010

Hi Group! New member here in Washington State; though I say "new" loosely, as I've been on the web site for a long time and have gleaned great information. This is my first, however, post. I just today brought home my second 1010 gas tractor. The first of these I owned about 20 years ago. I drove a couple hours to get it and shelled out $1500 for the opportunity to call it mine, haha.. I think I paid too much ugh.
Be that as it may I have some questions.
The seller sent it off with a cobbled mess of a setup for starting it. When I got it home tonight, I found that he had put the battery with the negative going to the started and the positive going to the frame. Isn't this supposed to be a negative ground system? I reversed the two; putting the positive to the starter, and negative to the ground.
After that, I'm still experiencing starting issues. There doesn't seem to be any 12v+ going to the key switch. There's a black wire that goes to a button just below the key switch that has 12v+, but nothing going directly to the key switch itself. When I run 12v+(hotwired) to a random terminal on the key switch, the tractor will start and run.(occasionally; I think the solenoid has gone out). There's only 4.6 volts going to the coil; its been a long long while since I've messed with one of these, but isn't it supposed to be 12 volts or close to it?
Also, is there a clutch adjustment? The clutch pedal gives resistance about 2 inches before it bottoms out.
I've attached a ton of pictures of my new purchase. I'm excited about it; and hope to get any and all advice you have for me.
THANKS!!

Don't know the first foggiest thing about it, specially electric. Very nice looking tractor. EXCEPT! I wouldn't just go switching around the electric wires, I think I personally would smoke a few things.

1010 came from factory positive ground. IIRC one adjusts clutch pedal free travel by turning cam(parts key 9). Ignition circuit has a voltage resistor to lower volts going to ign points while engine is running.

WOW!! don't I feel foolish for not knowing about positive grounding on that! Thanks for the info! I'll make the clutch adjustment as well.

I've messed with it for the afternoon and it's running great. Starts right up; I hope to drag a plow with it Monday and put it to a bit of a test. Another question I've pondered; any advice as to whether I should be putting a lead additive in the fuel? When this was made everything was leaded gasoline; will the new fuels hurt the valves on these old machines? THANKS!
