I know that you need to time the oil pump so that the Dist. will line up correctly on the 420 engine. My question is can the oil pump be put in 180 degrees out and allow the dist to be installed the same 180 degrees out and run just fine?

I have noticed that on my 420 the plug wires seem to turned 180 degrees from all the ones I have seen.

It seems to me that it should work and it does crank and run just fine I am just curious if anyone has seen this before and will it cause problems.

Yes, you can do that. The only issue is the routing of the wires. Other than that it will be fine.

I took the tractor to the mechanic that works on all of our JD tractors.

I pointed out that the distributor was 180o from all the rest of our Dubuque tractors.

Since the tractor runs just fine, then there is no reason to change the position.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone. That is what I was hoping for. I will leave it alone until I need to drop the pan for some other reason and then make it right.

I guess on the bright side I do know that the oil pump has been replace or at least removed and reinstalled even if it was by a mechanic that was not good at following the service manual

If you ever decide to "make it right", might study up on it. That word timing threw me for a while.

Actually you can drop/ install the oil pump up on any tooth on the cam. All you have to do then is bring it up on TDC on no 1, drop the distributor down on the drive, and rotate it until the rotor aligns with the first plug wire to come up in its rotation.

Wheew, hope I am not confused now!

I understand and hope that doesn't make both of us confused  I will prob just leave it alone till i need to do something in the pan then make it look more like it should.

Thanks again for everyone's help and input .
