Adding a Turbo to a 4020

I am working on swapping a 7700 non turbo engine into my 4020 that was a gas. I did some looking at some turbo set ups that others, Tim S. and Big Shooter, have put on a 4020 and it doesn't look impossible, but I was wondering what parts I would all need to make this possible.

I know that I will need to cut and weld things together to make the exhaust come through the hold in the hood, which I have "manufactured" one off's of other pieces for cars before so that is not a problem. My problem is knowing what pieces to buy so that I am not trying to put pieces in the wrong spot or something like that.

If you are interested. I have a complete M&W system that was recently taken off a late model 404 engine that was identical to the 7700. Manifolds and water inlet risers are all there so that a stock hood doesnt have to be modified. If interested my email should be open

If it would help I have a copy of the M&W turbo step by step install instructions. Even tells you how to remove the limiting springs in the injector pump lol. It would give you something to look at and then you can visualize and piece together the parts. The most difficult sounding thing in my opinion was flipping the water manifold so it hangs off the right side not over top of the engine. This is to create room for the turbo elbows etc.

4430 exhaust and intake manifold, turbo, an exhaust elbow off a john deere irrigation engine. If it is a console tractor and has 2 remotes you will have to machine the manifold to clear the bottom remote. There is just a little more magic you will have to do but not much. Call me any time, 660-641-5108. I would encourage you to catch up with Tim S as he has done this several times and has a slick setup for this now. He is also very helpful and considerate.

You had an oops. Early 4020's had scv valve under hood not side console models.

Here is one of the ways of doing it.

Tim I'll give you a call when I want to start the turbo phase of the tractor. I was mainly looking for a general how to right now and some costs.

It looks like I need a 4430 exhaust manifold and turbo, a 4320 elbow to go through the hood, some stainless tubing to get the air in and to connect the turbo to the elbow, which was welded solid?

I do have dual hydraulics under the hood so I would need to machine the exhaust? And was the intake just ground so it will fit under the hood? And why was a spacer plate added in between the elbow/turbo and the exhaust manifold?

To route the clean air an exhaust pipe was bent to the correct fit, then the hose that goes over the radiator for the clean air is fitted to the rear of the turbo to make the bend,it's the correct angle and stiff enough not to collapse, the darn hose is near $100 but it works well. I off-set the 4320 elbow and make a new coupler to fit between the turbo and the elbow, I buy a new 4430 coupler and cut it in half using a half in each end then welding a piece of pipe to each half, for clearance at the SCV you can cut a piece out and turn it over and weld it back in, it only takes a little to make it clear,,as you go you will see how it all works out, the down side is the turbo is close to the hood, the hood can be "fudged" out a bit with out showing, an heat patch off a 5520 hood makes a good heat insulator.., drilling and tapping the block and oil cooler for oil supply. I have been working on making a different exhaust manifold to let the turbo tilt away from the hood a bit, but that will mean moving the water manifold a bit too, I was working with using a new stock manifold and altering it to make all work out a bit better,,,I am getting behind on my projects right now, seems like I have been covered up with tractor repairs this winter and it's interfering with my Fun..

I did it the way Tim showed me but the turbo set to close to the hood even with some heat wrap not enough room still started to burn the paint.Started over and used a M@W turbo exhaust manifold that got me back in line with hole in hood.I machined some off of the water stands that leaned the water manifold over some to clear the turbo I used. You can buy a new air research TO4 replacement turbo made for the 4020 now instead of the rayjay. The gas air cleaner is not big enough for the diesel and cant find a dry 4020 one every body switched away of the oil bath none left around here. Some one give me a idea what to use.

Ok ginormous post. The PDF is huge so I snagged some screen caps of the pages. It will give you the idea on the stuff. I don't plan on ever doing this but got the manual just to learn about it. Its pretty cool book they put together.
