Unstyled L Engine ?

I purchased an Unstyled L that is in a few pieces. How can I tell the difference between the Herc NXA, which should be in it, and the Herc NXB used in the styled L's?
Thanks

IIRC, the NXA has a 3" bore and a 4" stroke, and the NXB has a 3-1/4" bore and a 4" stroke.

Without a nameplate, I personally know of no way to tell externally, as, IIRC, the engine parts all interchange except the pistons and rings.

easy to tell the hercules engines from the deere ones. One easy way is that Deere engines have flywheel housing cast into block where hercules is bolted on. On magneto side of the block on herc engines at the top next to the head there is a flat spot that has the engine serial number stamped into it and it should say nxa or nxb.
