Tractor running hot

Ok tractor running good. However still running hot. Changed

Water pump and thermostat. Doesnt loose coolant but after

Bush hogging for awhile it quit. Any suggestions ?

Have you measured the temperature with a infrared gun while the gauge says it's hot? Hit the front of the head near the temperature sender with the gun and see what it says.

Ok If the temperature gauge isn't confirmed to be accurate, install one that is. There might be something totally unrelated to over heating causing it to quit. If the engine is indeed overheating you shouldn't be using it until it stops. Doing so will ruin engine if it hasn't already. Possible reasons for ovrheating are endless but in addition to what has already been mentioned, out of time, dirty coolant system, grass clogged radiator and restricted exhaust are a few.

Can you define hot? is it just the temp gauge went up a little or pegged out?

As for it quitting, you didn't mention what model tractor it is or whether it has a gas or diesel engine. It is always good to let us know what it is that we are trying to diagnose remotely. I searched back through your posts and you've only posted 3 previous times, and they were all about a gas 5000, so I assume that's the tractor you're asking about here. After it runs for a while and quits, will it start right back up, or does it need to sit a while before it will start again? If it won't start up right away, try loosening the fuel cap to see if that helps. The fuel cap should be vented and it's possible that the vent ids clogged or it has a cap that isn't vented. If that doesn't help then I would suspect that the coil is going bad.

New dash cluster n temp sensor. Dont intend to keep using until I figure it out. May need to replace radiator, believe it could be original. Or close to it.

(quoted from post at 09:30:51 06/04/23) The Guage went all the way to red. Also knew temp sensor
and dash cluster.

Did you get both new components from the same source, and did the seller say that they were designed to work together? Different senders from different sources can have different variable resistances and each needs a gauge that is designed to work with that particular range of resistance.

What tractor? What fuel?
You say it's running hot, what indications are you basing this on? Have you taken any actual temperature readings? You said it didn't lose coolant, are you sure the cooling system was full? Did you change the thermostat and water pump before or after the running hot occurred?
When it shut off any indications as to why? If it's a gas tractor did you check for spark and fuel when it quit? If it's diesel did you check for fuel? Would the engine turn over after it quit?

Excuse me. Ford 5000 gas tractor. Yes I had spark issue
before. Think I fixed that. Was showing in the red before so I
changed temp sensor, thermostat and water pump. Also dash
cluster. Does have a little miss to it I think. Thought I was
good til I got bush hogging and then temp Guage went to red.

Before I could get it back up to house it quit. Went while ago
and it fired right up no problem. Drove it to house and shut it
off. Temp did get close to red red. Im just a shade tree
machanic so I dont have any specialty tools. Thanks

Sorry yes 1974 ford 5000 gas. Yes when it quit temp was in
the red. Wouldnt start back. Went out today n fired right up.

Drove it to house n shut it off. Changed coil the other day that
seemed to take care of spark issue. However still seems to
have little miss when running. Plugs cap n rotor looks fairly
new. Other than maybe changing radiator, Im clueless.

Also just checked with radiator cap off. Engine gets hit, temp Guage to red. Coolant barely warm. Took top hose off. Doesnt seem to be circulating through engine.

How long did it take for the gauge to go into the red, and was the engine just idling, or was it doing real work?

Just a few mins. 74 ford 5000. Left there over night. Fired
right up this morning. Parked it at house. I dont think its
circulating through engine. Took radiator cap off. Started it.
Temp was to red within few mins. But coolant wasnt hot.

Yes thermostat is in Correct. But will pull it when I get chance n run it without one to see if that makes a difference. Also like old days put thermostat in boiling pan of water to see if it opens. Thanks
