Fitting 6610 neutral safety switch

I don't know whether there is a broken one fitted but the wires that lead to it are cut off at the top. I've ordered a new one. Are they relatively simple to fit or am I into a world of hurt if I remove the cover?

Edit: just found the relevant bit in the repair manual - doesn't look too bad

(quoted from post at 00:37:51 06/03/23) Not all that hard to change. Be aware the switch doesn't come with the wires. That's separate.

I'm hoping there'll be enough wire left so that I can extend them. Haven't seen the connector for sale.

If the wires were cut off at the top cover, hopefully the ends with the connectors that plug into the switch are still inside and you might be able to solder some new wire to them. They make water and oil resistant heat shrink tubing that you can use to insulate and protect the solder joints both inside and outside the top cover.

I take crimp on bullets that are a bit small and expand them with a phillips to the correct size and make sure they are tight and dont fall out. Or just replace both sides of the connector with the smaller bullets or spade connectors.

One of the issues I ve had with neutral safety switches on my Ford is the switch sets to deep in the shift rail, I ve had new switches not make contact with the shifter in neutral
Adding a thin shim washer .010 - .030 thick moves the switch up enough for better contact
On a number of mine just adding a shim to the old switch go it back working again

Well I eventually got the cover off. I have the H pattern transmission and removing that was an ordeal. There was no wiring inside the case and the old switch doesn't appear to be working (no change in continuity with a multimeter when I press the ball in).

The manual has specific instructions for my gearbox so I should at least stand a chance to reinstall everything. I'll have a go at making a new wiring loom - reckon it should be possible.

Be nice if the gearbox stops jumping out of gear once I reassemble it but doubt I'll be that lucky...

Edit: old switch is intermittent. I assume when the ball is out (so seated in the shaft detent) that's the neutral position and when pressed in, it breaks the contacts and stops the starter working? Hopefully new switch arrives soon. I'll be testing it before I fit it.

Think terminals will have to be improvised out of brass or something (22LR shell casings!) unless I can find a harness (E4NN7A488CA/83948129)
