Popping Spark Plug Wire

I have a strange one here. I have a 65 3cyl gas ford 2000. After running a few minutes, I hear a sound like a cork pop and the engine starts running rough. I checked the plug wires, and noted that cylinder two wire was completely out of the socket and lying on the cylinder head. I replaced and tried again, same issue. Is it possible for the spark plug to have a leak where compression gasses are leaked into the spark plug wire cap to the point of "blowing" it off??

One possibility is that there is air trapped in the boot. When that air gets hot it expands and pops the boot off. You can use a straightened paperclip to create an air passage for when you push the boot on. Worth a try.

I've seen that happen when the ceramic in the spark plug is cracked and lets some of the pressure through, and also when you replace a plug and leave the old compression washer in the hole so the new one doesn't seal properly.

If the same plugs have been pulled and cleaned repeatedly, the crush washer loses ability to seal completely and you can't seal with correct torque. I fought this issue on a 67 3400 until I finally retrofitted with a Zenith carb and installed pertronix kit in the distributor. It immediately stopped fouling plugs and has run great for years since.

Try swapping the number 2 spark plug with one of the others to see if the problem follows that spark plug or if it stays at the number 2 wire.
