Gas motor transplant into 981

I have found a good running 172 gas motor from a 1958 841 to transplant into the 981 with the bad diesel motor. I have the complete 841 so all parts available. What problems might I run into on this switch?

I'm a 3 cylinder man but have been around
the 4 cyl tractors some.
If you have both complete tractors you
shouldn't have any problems with that
swap. I know you need to use different
brackets that bolt the fuel tank to the
head as those are different between gas
and diesel. And at least compare the rear
block plate for thickness as those
changed somewhere over the years.
I would be tempted to use the diesel
electrical componants on it as those were
12V and I prefer 12V.

Throttle linkage changes from battery box to transmission. Have to plug return fuel in tank. Air cleaner and battery box.

The 841 has been converted to alternator so it's already 12 volt. THe wiring needs to be cleaned up but I can do that when I move the gas 172 to the 981. Both fuel tanks are good so I could use the gas tank and sell the extra. The 841 runs but tin work is rough other than the fenders, tires wore out, one rear rim is starting to rust through from fluid. It had a loader at some time in it's life. It does have a good, working power steering system. I put my 7' finish mower on the 841 tonight just to run the motor under load for a while.

Yes, If all parts are available switch is pretty easy. You can go with the smaller 841 battery box. change out to the SOS flywheel.. Either keep the 12 volt generator or go with the alternator, your choice.

Having power steering is real nice. I
would definately put that on the tractor
you're keeping - if it doesn't already
have it. Otherwise it will sell well. You
should be able to sell the 4 speed pretty
easily too. I would sell the whole back
half together. Make sure you include the
flywheel and block plate in the deal.

Thanks. The 981 does have working power steering. The diesel has a bad knock and slight squeal/screech before I shut it down. I did run it long enough to shift the SOS in both reverse gears and 3 though 9 forward gears. Taking a little risk that the SOS is working when warmed up I guess. I purchased it not running. It had been setting for about 7 years. Owner passed away.

With nonrunners is always a gamble sometimes is pays off big and sometimes it doesn't. Never liked the balancers in those early diesels. Good luck with your project.
