Ford 3 cyl 3000 SOS

A while back , a post appeared on this forum regarding a problem with SOS trans. I posted I had two good ones if needed. Guy contacted me and wanted one. He sent check, cheap, cause I no longer have the 3000) , I held the check until he had shipping arranged. Finally was to be shipped next Tuesday. He calls and wants to cancel. O.K. He has a chance to buy a 3000 with Hi-lo 4 speed with a blown engine. My question? Will his 3 cyl gas engine bolt up cleanly from a SOS tractor to a 4 speed with no other alterations regarding the engine output shaft.? I have never had the Fords with standard shift, no longer have the manuals. And yes, I will refund his money. What do you know?

Sorry you lost the sale.
I hate it when people do stuff like that.
Yes, any 3 cylinder engine will bolt up on both ends.
It will take some screwing around if he's putting a gas into a diesel or vice versa but even that is not hard to do.

Thanks Ultradog, I kind of thought that after thinking it thru. It's good for him, shipping was going to cost about 120% of the trans cost.

John (Tequila), I really appreciate you asking this question. There is no way I would not pay you for your time and effort on my behalf. The Industrial 3000 tractor I was able to secure is, visually, complete and in very good condition. I was told the intake exhaust pipe broke off, water got in the engine and it is stuck. Being in eastern Oregon and very dry country, I hope the engine can be unstuck. We're going to unload it tomorrow afternoon and pull it into the shop. With the whole tractor costing me $600 plus the $150 in gas it took to get it, I still believe this is the correct path to take. I needed fenders, one rear wheel and various other small parts. With the SOS full of water, it seems the differential also got filled with water.

You have been beyond great to work with and talk to. I am greatly indebted. With learning the shipping may cost close to $1,000 and us NOT knowing how to adjust the SOS, installing an 8 speed just seems reasonable. I read the SOS manual and altho it walks one through the process, it still seems intimidating.

At this point, we have the original 3000 completely torn down, parts sandblasted, straightened and most painted. Tomorrow begins the fun of tackling the industrial model.

I need to investigate further, but it seems the industrial one - technically a "Pre-Force 3000 Utility", has a few easy to spot differences: heavier duty front axle, huge HD intake air cleaner (was in a dusty environment), 16.9 x 28" rear tires (versus 14.9 x 24), a foot operated throttle and a huge overhead sun screen. Maybe we'll discover others.
