3550 6x4 trans trash or 8x2 upgrade?

So here is the story, I have a new to me 72 3550 backhoe with the 6x4 trans. I used it for a couple months just slipping it in low gear without any fuss but had a few moment where a clutch would have been nice. I couldn?t get the clutch to release so I split it and noticed the input shaft was twisted (cracked splines) not allowing the plate to release among a few other things holding it. Question would be is it worth cutting/ welding the input shaft or just upgrade to the 8x2. Forgot to mention the shaft can not be found and yes I know that shaft is heat treated. What?s your thoughts?

Does the tractor have a front end loader on it? If it does and you do a lot of loader work with it I would try to keep it a 6x4 rather than go to an 8 speed.
The reason is, for loader work you do a lot of back and forth driving and the 6x4 has 3F and 2R in each range. That lets you find the "right" gear in both ranges.
The 8 speeds are great transmissions too but for loader work you would have to do a Lot more shifting of both sticks to do the same work a 6x4 will.
I would check out Shaun Wallace's offer - if the distance isn't too great. I have never met him or traded with him but from reading his posts here for a dozen or more years can say he knows a Lot about these Fords and seems to be the type who would not misrepresent an item he's selling.

Wouldn't mind a whole unit. Are you around the Oklahoma area? If there is some distance a part might be better.

Thanks for the comments. It does have a loader and will stay around the farm doing odds and ends. Hard to say how much loader work. Would like to weld up a thumb on the hoe to make it useful. My short term was to use it to dig up some shell next to the creek and then head out to the old rotten burn piles to smooth out...that should keep me busy for awhile. And tree stumps...lots of tree stumps..

Shaun, when you have time please post or send me some pictures. Would like to see what the splines are like. That may not be too far of a drive for me. Do you know about how many hours the trans had on it? Pm.. krgreuel(at)gmail

Texas is a good ways from Ky, I have a 4500 with 6x4 and no pto, pto would make the tractor more useful for me but the distance would make probably cost to much in freight.
