Paint color question.

I'm trying to find the correct color of gray paint for my 66 4000. I mentioned I had stopped at CNH yesterday and bought a quart of their paint. Part #MJ20J1750SE2DS. Says Ford Gray 1965-1994.
This stuff doesn't seem to be even close to the color I think? it should be.
It's more like the olive gray that was used on the 8Ns, NAAs and maybe the Hundreds.
I thought the 65-75 Fords used more of an almost white color.
Anyway, I'm kinda honked to have bought this. I did stop at Home Depot yesterday and had the can Well shaken.
Does anyone have a paint number for the correct white or is my memory that far off on the cirrect shade of gray?
Thanks

I can't help you with the numbers, but I can see that Fiat has no interest in our old Fords. I found a can of gray labeled something like 1943 -i964 gray. When we know that there are three different grays in that time frame. It is all about minimizing inventory.

That's what I'm using on my 6000. That stuff is weird in that it has a yellowish tint to it as it goes on, but once it's dry it whitens up. I believe it to be correct. Give it a try on a test piece and see if I'm right.

I have a rattle can from the mid 90-s that says, GRAY GLOSS ENAMEL, M20J-1750-SE5 and a couple of quarts that say GRAY GLOSS, M20J-1750-SE2. There's a DS after the SE2 that appears to be hand written. Not sure if the label was misprinted or the SE2 preceded the SE2DS. Not much help as that's the same code you have.

The problem with paint codes is that the materials keep changing to keep up with EPA regs and like everything else, the manufacturers' tech support knows little or nothing about current colors, let alone the past.

To add, and I think you'll find this interesting. The two cans shown below were purchased about a year ago from my local dealer. Notice the color bands on the top of both cans. The blue is dead on, the gray is not even close, however the color inside is correct (I'll call it eggshell white). I noticed that your can of gray does not have the color band. I suspect someone pointed out this obvious error to either NH and/or their supplier (Valspar I believe) and they went ahead and removed the color band from at least the gray.

You mean like this. I guess that's why so many 9n/2n were red bellies.

I had some Tisco Ford Gray that I used to paint these rims.
I smeared some of the CNH gray that I bought yesterday in an unobtrusive spot and they both are the same color.
I still think it is too almond or olive gray.
Btw, these are those John Deere rims I bought last winter for $100 and modified the Ford centers to fit.
Ken wanted a project so he bought the 4600 trans/rear end and 4200 gas engine from me and will finish it and sell it.
I had the chassis all assembled with new seals everywhere, good pressure plate and new disc. It'll be another hodge podge but should be a decent tractor for someone.

I'm pretty satisfied with the way my white (err, I mean gray) has turned out. It perfectly matches the shade of white in the original 6000 literature that I have. For those who think the color might be faded on the lit, it even matches the pictures on the inside.

I don't even know why Ford called it gray, since it's much closer to white. They should have called it off-white or something like that. It's definitely whiter than say what you'd find on the hood of an 8N.

Ford use to call that Gray Gloss and it did look more like white when it was applied. If you tried to touch it up with white it became very obvious that it was a very light gray.

The DS was added to part numbers for many things when Ford changed from stocking some things to having them Direct Shipped (DS) to the dealers from the suppliers.

Well, now I can post, kind of, as long as I don't post a link.

I'm sure these Ford paint colors are "what were," not "what can be," but they may have some value.

Changed out the front rims on the row crop. Ran short so picked up a rattle can from the ford dealer. Numbers were the same on both cans on the front and back wheel.

A friend of mine worked for a Ford tractor dealer here in the UK when the 6X range was introduced. He told me that when a batch of new tractors came to the depot they would take the tinwork off them and swop them round till they got a matching set to put back on the new tractors. MJ
