Ford 971 SOS with corn picker value Pics

I know a guy who will sell me a 971 gas with a 2-head corn picker in nice shape. ABout 2800 hrs on the proofmeter. Told it runs well. I am interested in any opinions on pricing of this. Wants $4800. Considering it is an early SOS tranny, that has me a little concerned. Included in the pics are a couple closeups of the band adjustment screws showing what is left of the threads. Not sure how much of an indication of the wear and remaining life as far as the bands. No info on whether engine was overhauled in the past. The present owner is 2nd or 3rd owner. I haven't tried starting it yet.
Thanks

It's an early one and will have ORC with coasting gears.

That said, it looks good to me and I certainly would not be afraid of it from the photos.

Price seems reasonable if all works as it should when up to temperature.

Looks good to me! Fair enough on asking price. Maybe you can dicker a bit. Ask if the tractor fenders are included in case you ever take the picker off. Also the drawbar bracket that goes around the PTO shaft as it comes off in order to put the belt pulley on. Things like the stands for the front end (one each side)if you want to take the picker off, stands for the husking bed, one each side, one on the back.

Yes it is an early SOS and it could have had 5,000 on it before the sloppy paint job. It could work well but I wouldn't buy it for a worker.

It looks like a pretty decent rig. Pickers can be bought pretty cheap still but having it already mounted and with some paint on it is worth quite a bit. I have painted 2 pickers and it is a chore. If you get it and have questions on the picker feel free to contact me I have a soft spot for the Ford pickers

This picker is the older model (16-66) 1955-1961) of the two models Ford built. It appears to me to be poorly taken take care of for no more use than it has had. Note the missing permanent covers over the side elevators. Have never seen that before. But, haven't seen one of these in a looooong time. So would hate to see it get away. But at my age all I can do is wish

Don't know where you are but in
Alabama the price would be right.
Good looking set up. I bet it
would be a big hit at a tractor
show! Keep us posted. Hope you
get it!!

Thank you all for your comments. Very helpful! And thanks to 9000puller for offering future advice if I decide to buy it. Still on the fence about it and need to see it running.

Hello Blair , The tractor has way more than 2800 hrs on it more 4000 hrs bands are about shot . New trans. , new bands show about 5 threads if it had 2800 hrs and was maintained it should show 3 or 3 1/2 threads . I lost your number otherwise I would have just called . Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
Nice to hear from you and thanks for the info! I suspected those bands were worn since I had more threads left on my Ford 881.

I lost your number as well after losing two cell phones! I think I can find your number elsewhere though. I was thinking about contacting you about an elenco.
Best,
Blair
