Ford 5000 SOS Bands

Can anyone tell me the Specs on the SOS A, B and C bands, Thickness and material. I've just done a tear-down and replaced a broken B Planetary but notice the bands seem very worn and want to re-bond them.

Thanks for the help I'm new to the forum so apologise if this is been discussed previously.

I don't know that you'll find specs anywhere for something like that - it's certainly not in the Ford repair manual. If the grooves are still well defined, I think I'd re-use it. Another thing you can do is try and gauge how many threads you have left on your adjustment screw. If you're in the middle somewhere, run it.

Try Leroy at Page Implement in Luray VA. He has a lot of rebuilt SOSs, and parts on the shelves.

Thanks Bern, there is still some shoe on the bands but it is only about 0.040". I was expecting more. Prior to breaking the planetary 6 & 7 were not working so I am guessing that the bands have been slipping. I just don't know how much shoe needs to be there to operate and am a bit reluctant to reassemble as is.

Thanks Bern - no blueing but some scoring on the steel

Would you think that 40 thou of shoe would be enough to keep this going for another 2000 hrs. I can see some groves on the inside of the shoe but these are almost smooth.

It's hard to say - I've never measured a good one. I've been into many SOS transmissions in my life, and have never replaced a single band,
if that tells you anything.

Do what I suggested earlier - assemble and adjust it and see how many threads you have left on your adjustment screw. That's your best wear
indicator right there.

How much are you going to use it?
I would reassemble if it will be like most our tractors!
If it's working every day and long hours, then yes, find another set of bands.
BTW, A big hello to all!

Zeke & Bern thanks for the help.

I guess in the day you just throw the old away and buy a new set of brakes, but parts are scarce so I thought I would just bond the brakes and start new. But knowing what a new one looks like is becoming just as difficult as finding parts.

I'll put new lining on, make a few assumptions and say double the thickness and just use a modern wet lining material.

The tractor has been working hard pushing up felled timber for the last 4 months and still a lot to got, prior to that this tractor has done enough farm work over the last 13 years to pay for itself 10 times over, so reluctant to just scrap it.

Be careful how thick you lay it on. You might find yourself with no room for adjustment once you out it all together. Myself, I'd see what
you have for adjustment before I did anything else.
