1971 Ford 4400 Select O Speed

Hello, I have a 1971 Ford 4400 Diesel Select O Speed with only about 1800 hours on it. It starts and runs like a new one. I am about at wits end trying to figure out why my shifter is slipping. It is not the transmission. I have had the cover off and I can shift it by hand smoothly through all gears from Park to 10th. It shifts flawlessly. The problem I have is that I can not get the shifter nut tight enough to pull or push the cable through the conduit. I can remove the conduit and the cable pulls and pushes through it with no problem at all. I can take the lower cable and pull and push through all the gears. It does seem tight, but it will shift with just my fingers pulling and pushing the cable. There are no bends, kinks, or burrs. When I put it back together, the shifter handle and gear indicators just spin freely. It feels like there should be more tension there, but I have already broken the aluminum shift shaft on one end trying to hold it in the vice to tighten it. Wierd! Rolling Eyes

Also, if anyone out there knows where I can get a shifter/shifter shaft/etc. I sure would appreciate some advice.

The pot metal/aluminum outside has broke loose from center steel piece. Not much can be done with except replace wheel and cable.

Just went through the same... but had a kink in the upper shifter cable, that destroyed the pot metal wheel. Even though it was a newer 65' plus machine, bought used parts for a pre '65 machine and found they matched perfectly, other than the shift lever being longer. the upper cable and wheel are identical, only the lever is a little bit different.

Sorry, no idea. I've seen them listed, but haven't paid much attention, since I wasn't looking for them. Don't know as I've seen the cable and shifter sell together, either.
