Ford 4000 SOS

Anyone who was following my last post about the stuck PTO
output shaft on my 4000 cylinder select o speed, I got it out
awhile back. Rigged up another pulling device and finally
popped out. It is different than the manual transition pto as it is
fully independent. Doesn't look like the back of shaft was
mushroomed out either or had something holding it in place.
Got all the seals changed and now it doesn't want to engage.
Before I removed The shaft, it would constantly spin unless
under light load. Probably a worn out brake for it. Now it
doesn't spin or engage at all...just one thing after another with
this little tractor. Can't imagine I ripped out anything when it
pulled so not sure what happened now.

I don't remember which 4000 you have but if it a 4 cylinder 4000 the coupler between the tranny and the outside shaft for the pto is probably laying @ the bottom of the hydraulic area of the rearend. Take the round plate off the side and see if coupler is on the shaft. Word of caution tho, on the early 4000's the traction disconnect s also on the same plate and the shift arm must be in the groove of that coupler when you put the plate back on. If it is not then you will find that now your tractor won't move either. Not too tough to check it out. My 2 cents worth Greg NE

Not familiar enough with them to say what might be wrong with the pto, but I do know that a spinning pto when there's no load is common... even normal. There is no pto brake. The 5000 was the only model to have a SOS and a pto brake.

OK! I'll say it one more time. This is the last time, however! The part you pulled out is no different than what you would pull out of an identical model with a gear drive transmission. If you don't believe me, look it up on CNH's parts website. The difference in independent PTO SOS tractors and same model gear tractors with live or transmission PTO's happens in the SOS transmission on all but the 5000 and immediately behind the transmission on gear transmission tractors.

mushroomed out either or had something holding it in place.

An inexperienced person likely could not detect that even if it was dinged enough to cause problems pulling it apart.

As has been said, this tractor has no PTO brake. The only SOS tractor that has a PTO brake is the 5000.

You'd better imagine a little harder. As has been said, you likely pulled and dropped the coupling when you pulled the shaft. I don't believe this "one thing" is the poor little tractor's fault!
