1967 4000 diesel starter problem

I'm getting 12V to the solenoid from the switch, but only rarely does the solenoid engage. If I short directly from starter to solenoid contact it works fine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Look for bad wire/wire connection from ign sw to neutral safety sw to start solenoid. You are not getting sufficient current via that path but do get it with your short connection.

thanks, I just shorted the neutral switch wires and it started fine. I get about 100 ohms between the wires leading into the trans?

Yes,
My first guess would also be the neutral
safety switch.
Phil,
Those switches often dont close properly.
Sometimes you can hold the key to start
and wiggle the high/low shifter a bit to
get it to turn over. Or as a test, you can
unplug the two wires going from under the
dash into the top of the transmission and
plug them together. If it starts you know
it's the neutral safety switch that is the
problem.

just did a little more testing and found that the resistance from neutral switch varies from high to a low of about 50ohms when I wiggle the H/L lever. I'm guessing the switch or internal connections are the prob. How much hassle to replace the neutral switch? I really don't want to do w/o it as my kids and grandkids sometimes use it.

Just received a new switch and connecting wire set from Yesterday's and it was indeed a cheap and easy fix. Thanks for the help.
