Ferguson TO 30 Wont Run Well

Hello,
I have a Ferguson TO 30 that will not run well. When I start it, it does not have the power it should have, and constantly backfires. It barely has enough power to be able to drive on a flat driveway. I have good fuel flow, and I just changed the spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor, and it still is doing it. Last year, it started this, and would run like this intermittently, running normally the rest of the time. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

It sounds like a timing problem. Similarly it may be the advancement on the distributor is stuck. With the cap off you should be able to turn
the rotor slightly and feel the spring tension. If no movement you will need to pull the distributor out and get it moving.



So start by seeing if the rotor moves first.

Make sure the spark plug wires are in proper order - firing order 1-3-4-2, distributor rotor turns counter clockwise.
 

Thanks, Yes, I have a little spring tension with turning the rotor. Only Counterclockwise. Plug wires are in the correct order as well. Is it possible that the distributor slipped by a tooth in the gear to put the timing off?
 
I dont think you slipped a tooth, just may be slightly out of time. If you have a timing light check out the timing, to adjust loosen the bolt on
the retainer plate enough to gently rotate distributor. Do you have a manual to verify settings?

Wow! That was it! I swapped out the condenser, now it is running great again! Thank you!!

Glad it worked. Condenser seldom fail so that engine will barely run, but it does happen.
