1949 TO20 Shut Off While Brush Hogging

I recently picked up a 1949 TO20. All I had to do to get it running when I got it was sand the points. I have also changed the oil.

I was out brush hogging for about 45 minutes when it just died. I saw gas peeing out of the carb (link to picture at the end). When I turn it over the stream slows and when I let off, I see steam or something come out of the engine dipstick port on the block, and can hear what I can best describe as the sound of pressure relieving, I believe also coming from that area.

It was running great up to that point. But now I cannot get it to start. Did I drop a cylinder?

PS I also see some drips coming from the circled shaft in the picture. The gas flow out of the spot under the bottom of the carb has been going for a few minutes. Also when I let off the starter, I hear a gurgling.

Sounds like the float in your carb may not be shutting off the fuel flow and it flooded out. Pull off the air cleaner pipe at the carb and see if it is full of gas. Be sure to shut off the fuel at the tank or it may fill up your engine if the air cleaner connections are tight.

Need more info. I assume motor is not locked-Good!. 1: Fuel out carb- Shut off tank tap!!! Can be as simple as stuck float-crap in seat. If all checks out,
try to start it with carb wet, fuel off. 2- Check all engine fluids. Got Gas in oil? bad- not fatal-see #1. Got water in oil- trouble. Got anti freeze in
rad? 3- steam in crankcase: can be as simple as the old girl has worn rings, and you put a big load on her-blowby. Hope you didn't change oil with some
synthic 0W or 5W- xx sissy stuff. Your tractor is old, probably neglected, use lots of affordable 30w or 40W till you sort her out, it is more or less
summer. Lastly- did you have good oil press., coolant flow to rad.(use your hand to see what is cold-warm-hot. Does not apply to metal fan). , spark at the
time of failure, and did you confirm heat range of plugs+ timing? The small stuff has teeth. Good luck.

Those are all great things to check, thank you!

Motor is not stuck. I never changed the plugs, maybe I will go ahead and do that.

Be sure and check oil level and smell it to see if it has gasoline in it. Sounds like the float valve in the carburetor stuck open or the float sunk. Pull the plugs and see if they are wet with gas.

Looks like I have a bad needle and seat or a sunk float. I pulled the air inlet off and gas dumped out. Turned the fuel off and it started right up.

What carb is this so I can get a proper kit?
