TO-35 Manifold Gasket Replacement

Can the manifold be removed/replaced without removing the heat shield and fuel tank on the Continental gas model?

The searches I did discuss how difficult it is to get wrenches on the nuts, but they don't say conclusively if you have to remove the heat shield and fuel tank.

If so, how much is involved to remove the fuel tank and heat shield? Can the heat should be removed without removing the fuel tank?

Are there 4 or 8 bolts holding the manifold to the head?

Heat shield will have to come off. I would think the tank will also but
never tried with tank on. I always take tank off. Just 4 bolts holding
tank and gas line.Just loosen two bolts with spring on front then remove
the 2 at back and it will slide back off springs. I remove battery to
make it easier.

I'm guessing the four bolts on top are between the heat shield and the manifold. It does sound simpler to pull the fuel tank then. I always worry about frozen nuts and bolts on a 60 yr old machine.

My advice is pull the gas tank off. Not that hard. You can swish it around and drain any crud. I found a
mouse nest in there and was glad I did. Just think if that caught fire. Then, you have access to
everything else much easier. I adjusted the valves and replaced the valve cover gasket which was
cracked.
