TO 20 Won?t Turn Over

Hello,

We have a ?49 TO 20. It?s been converted to 12v. The ceramic ballast resistor below the battery broke and I replaced it. The tractor won?t turn over at all now. It has the shift lever start.

Battery is 100% charged. Battery terminals clean and bright. Battery cables clean and tight on each end. New starter switch.

Jumper cable attached to starter will turn it over.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to try next please?

I?m thinking it has something to do with the resistor wiring, as that is the only thing that has changed since it last started, but I don?t understand what it does or how exactly it is supposed to be wired...

Thank you for your help!

Rick

"New starter switch."

This is where I would start with the diagnosis - check for continuity thru the switch when the shift lever is in start position -

The ballast resistor would measure about 1.5 ohms and is designed to be used in series with a 6 volt coil which also measures 1.5 ohms. If you come across a 12 volt coil, it measures 3 ohms and does not need a ballast resistor.

An open resistor would not prevent the tractor from turning over. It would just not run.
