40 years ago there was a small agricultural firm here in Mid Wales UK that used to improve MF35 4cyl starting
I cannot remember what they did to achieve this as they kept it secret but one thing was done was building up tops of pistons with weld and something was done with valves and in recent years there is a retired engineer who drills and taps heads to insert Isuzu glowplugs and I have seen a tractor start up straight away which has had this done. I know of someone who wants to do this to his tractor as he is going to recondition engine and is there anything else he should do regarding pistons and injector pump etc thanks in advance

I personally prefer the thermostart unit instead of glow plugs. On any diesel, compression heat is your friend when it comes to starting. There's talk of using a deburr tool to open up the pre-chamber, but I've heard it can make black smoke worse when running, so I didn't do that to mine when apart. I did modify the block center plug hole and installed a water heater on mine, if it's warmed up any at all it starts just fine so I use it when needed. If the ambient temp is 70F or more mine starts fine with no help, but in a 60F shop it still needs the thermostart 14 seconds when cold. The 23C I have in here for a good friend won't even do that..

Mine has glow plugs and I rebuilt over the winter. Before the rebuild It needed glow plug heat if the water temp was below 100, I'm curious to find out how it starts now.

Yes, the thermostart equipped tractors have a small reservoir that holds the fuel needed for the thermostart unit, tied into the return fuel line system. Two heating coils are used, first one heats up then the second allows fuel in on the first coil, starting the fire and heating the air. When engine is cranked the warm air helps with the engine compression heat on cold starts. Mine works best to crank the engine after 14 seconds heating. CAV/Lucas/Delphi make the thermostarts in low, medium and high flow for different engine sizes. When used correctly they work well, brother has three MF 8160 SISU/Valmet tractors that have the units too.
