1486 rattling noise

Ive got a 1486 with a ton of hours on it that has
developed a rattle under the cab, perhaps near the
front of the transmission housing. Thats the best info
I can provide because I have a significant hearing issue
that makes it tough to tell where a noise is coming
from. It does this when the tractor is moving in either
high or low range. I havent attempted to see if it does
it in reverse. It stops as soon as I press the clutch
pedal, even if the tractor is coasting. I cant feel any
vibration, just the rattling noise. Its got a rear main
seal thats been leaking for awhile so its going to have
to be split anyway. Just wondering what could be
causing the rattle. Thanks.

How about this?

If I see what is going on correctly in the photo Fritz posted I would think that would make quite a noise as the clutch was being engaged. And possibly under heavy loading if the clutch began to slip if it even would. I assume the condition shown is caused by a flywheel that has been turned beyond spec and then the clutch button pads were severely worn allowing the cushion spring assembly to contact the flywheel. Or maybe the clutch plate was installed backwards, but they generally do not even release when that is done. You do not come right out and say whether the noise is heard just setting in neutral. If it can be take a long screwdriver or wood dowel and hold it against the area the noise seems to be coming from and hold the other end to your ear. This will give you a mechanics budget stethoscope to pin point the noise location.

The eventual remedy for the above picture was to machine.040 inch step in flywheel for spring clearance . I dont know if thats the problem with this 1486 but the symptoms were similar.

Never seen that before . Looks like someone installed the disc backwards as the springs face the pressure plate not the flywheel .

Your rattling COULD be from the lower counter shaft caused by the lower shaft nut backing off . That is NOT good . And a easy way to check and make sure the lower shaft gears are not flopping around you can drain the oil and drop the plate on the belly where the trans brake arm goes in and you can wiggle the gears If they are loose then a double split is in order .

The clutch free pedal adjustment was off, so I adjusted that per the service manual. I just went out and ran it for an hour or so on the box scraper and no more rattle.

Vet, I just blew it up and on the left side you can see it actually has the ..Flywheel side.. printing on it. Either they machined the flywheel to far, which would seem to be a lot which would not leave much meat for heat dissipation or could it be possible the bigger clutch plate was put in a 7xx series flywheel??

Ok so you adjusted the clutch . what about the other two adjustments that goes along with adjsting the clutch ????????? If you change one then ya have to adjust the other two . what about the cab mounts , they can affect the clutch adjustments and the shift linkage . LOTS to learn on them yet to come .

Well I guess Ill have to check the other adjustments.trans break and clutch booster linkage right? Ill give the cab mounts a visual too. Thanks.

When you adjust the free travel on the clutch you adjust the trans brake then the DUMP_ VALVE . And going BY THE BOOK on OLD tractors that have seen extensive field testing does not work out due to ware . I hqave covered this many times on how i do it . Early 86's mounted the clutch linkage different then later ones .

Only a couple of this style tractor. I was not even jabbing you this time, only pointing out what I saw. By the way where is the pilot bearing? Something about that whole deal is a little fishy.
