Have a H that seems to be stuck in 5th, I pulled the shifter out and all 3 rails are in neutral. I can shift into different gears but it doesn't change anything.
If I let out the clutch it will not move forward.
What do I need to look for?
Thanks

probably have a clutch problem .if it was stuck in fifth it would be pulling the engine down. they usually get stuck in 2 gears and when letting the clutch out it will just kill the engine.

Not the clutch, and yes if I release the clutch it will die. Not sure which gear it is stuck in.
I was back dragging with the loader stopped put into reverse and when I shifted it into 2nd that's when it wouldn't move.
I replaced one of the shift rails 3 years ago that broke, acting the same way except all 3 rails are there this time, unless the fork broke?

Maybe a stray ball bearing from a bad axle bearing stuck down between the bull gear and the housing? Seen that a few times. Usually results in punching a hole in the case.

If it has the pulley gearbox, maybe take that off and you can see what's going on in the transmission.

"if I let out the clutch it will not move forward"... you didn't say the engine stalls. i take that as engine is running. so yes once you say engine stalls different story. get a bar and manually shift each shifter and you should be able to tell if the detents are holding shifter in each gear. can tell by the feel. has to be something with shifters if this problem happened when you were shifting gears.

I would say it is most likely stuck in reverse and 2nd. Looking in the shifter hole I would pry the two shift rails on the right forward and see if you can get it to release. If there is to much pressure against the wheel caused by the terrain you may have to jack up a wheel to release the tension. Jacking up both wheels will also eliminate the bearing and bull gear theory, which I really doubt is your issue. If that was the problem when you would let out the clutch the tractor would try to move by the opposite wheel as if you were holding one brake. Also there is a possibility that it also got shifted into 4th as well, I don?t think if the detent balls are in the shifters correctly that that can happen but wear on these old tractors allows them to have issues they didn?t have when they had less field testing. Good luck!

You indicate that all rails are lined up. This indicates that there is at least one sliding component that has lost its connection to the shift rails, or has a broken shift fork. I think you will be removing the top. Looking through the Belt pulley drive hole will confirm it. Jim

Is there any way you can post some pictures of the transmission from the top while you have it in what you think is neutral? I think you may have a gear that isn't sliding all the way out of mesh. If it is in neutral you should be able to turn the gears with the clutch in.

Update: I removed the belt pulley cover and ran through the gears everything looks good, shift rails work fine, everything moving shift forks look good. I jacked up the rear end and both wheels turn freely when in what should be neutral. Now I am completely stumped.
I have my loader with my snowblade on ( don't laugh they are calling for a foot of snow tomorrow) I can not raise the loader.
Any suggestions on where to go from here?
Thanks J

Could it be the throw out bearing? Just asking.
Thanks J
