My 1952 H sat with little gas in the tank and has developed rust in the tank. How can I clean this out? The tank is off the tractor.

Remove tank . Fill with nuts and bolts and white vinegar . Shake vigorously and let soak overnight . Repeat as needed . Rinse out with water and baking soda solution followed by pure water . This will clean out very well per my experience. Be aware that if terribly rusted the abrasive action of the nuts and bolts may create a pin hole . If this happens the tank may have been junk anyway . I have successfully used this process on multiple occasions .

Muriatic acid, or take the tank to a radiator shop and have it chemically cleaned. Nuts, bolts, and other assorted hardware is not a good idea. That hardware will end up behind the baffle and you will never get it out.

Could you use sand in a baffled tank ? Ive never cleaned one with baffles so just asking .

I would not. That baffle has a very narrow opening at the bottom. VERY narrow. The very first gas tank I attempted to clean, I used some very fine crushed rock and sand. Quite a bit of it is still in that tank. Lodged between the baffle and the bottom of the tank.

I agree,I just bolted the tank back on my Super C after an acid soak and rinse. Soac it then roll it over and soak
some more till you have covered the inside completely. After a very good rince I dry mine with a shop vac set to
blow. In a nputher twenty years I ll do it again.(save the acid and use it again)

I have a spare H gas tank with rust in it on about the upper 1/4th. The bottom 3/4 is OK.

How do you go about using the muriatic acid?

I had a tank on a super H like that. I took some average size gravel like you use on a driveway put it in the tank shook it several time cleaned it up nice. then coated with some sealant I bought at NAPA has been used now for three years.
