That's why they used 90 weight oil...

I wasn't going to post this now, as Charlene is having starter issues..again, but here goes.

I just changed her transaxle oil, like I posted it was a heavy oil, 80 or 90 weight, not 10w hytrans like required. I went back with a lightweight oil as specified. Last week after cranking her up I took her for a spin around the property, just warming her up checking fences. I went thru all the gears except 5th, and ran her in 4th DD at low throttle a while. After a bit I heard a distinct noise from the transmission, a clank-clunk, clank-clunk. It was like the pendulum on a clock, with an even rhythm. More throttle and the straight pipe exhaust covered up most the noise, but it was still there...

It only happens in 4th...well I haven't tried 5th as the pasture's too rough.

Someone commented on changing transaxle oil and hearing noises like mine and thought they might go back to 90w to stop the sound.

Whacha think?

Do you have wheel weights on that tractor? Are all of the bolts nice and tight? How about the axle clamp bolts? How about the front wheel lug bolts?

I was the one considering going back to 90W with my 350. My knocking noise is related in some manner to the PTO.

I put a set of used Super H gears in my H once, and either I broke one of the teeth putting one gear in or it was already damaged and I didn't see, but it would tick audibly. It
was the lower constant mesh gear as I recall. I tore it down again and put in another used gear I had and it became happy again, and stayed that way at least till I sold it. It
sounds like one of the gears that makes 4th may have a broken tooth, or maybe something else, but that what comes to my mind.

I changed my 64 MF35 trans/diff/hydraulic system fluid from possibly OEM 80SAE suggested viscosity w, Hypoid smell to the new suggested 5w30 Trans/Hydraulic for this tractor.

Shortly after using it, I noticed it having a rattling noise, that seems to be effected, quieter by clutch pedal pushed down (input shaft-disc not turning) to louder with clutch pedal up (disc-shaft turning). Not sure if a bearing is noisy yet, or just the fact old tractors don't like the lighter viscosity oil.

I plan on draining, inspecting closer for metal in lube and possibly going back to 80SAE as owner's manual suggests.

Move the seasonal disconnect to off & the PTO will not operate.
Check owner's manual for info.
Do not use 90 weight, not compatible with the Torque Amplifier.

(quoted from post at 19:01:45 01/23/19) check all your rim to wheel and wheel to axle and wheel weight bolts, they can sound like trans problems.

Strange I never heard the sound until I changed the heavy oil with light weight oil. The sound appears to come from the gearbox, but i'll check the bolts.
