M pto seals

Got a 1949 farmall m. Pto seals leaking. Order a seal from eBay. Single wide rubber lip seal. Drilled hole in old seal. Couldn?t get out with screw. Pulled housing off back side. To my surprise, appears to be about 3 seals in there. Or 1 thick one. Should I get another one off eBay and double stack those in? Triple stack?! Do I need one facing backwards to prevent water getting in? Doubt I do but figure ask the pro?s. Thanks!!

The new seal is probably 3 times better than the old ones. Look at the shaft at the seal rub point and assess it for wear grooves. grease the new seal with chassis grease on the inside and lip to assure lube on startup. clean and polish the shaft with 600 grit paper (round and round, not in and out). Place the new seal into the bore such that the lip runs where there is no wear, lip toward the inside. jim

The original is one very thick, old technology leather seal. They needed that much leather to do the same job as one modern "rubber" lip seal.

Just get the old seal out and install the new one flush with the outside of the housing. It will be fine.
