400 valve cover gasket

Need little help finding right gasket for valve cover. I have purchased a engine gasket set for a engine from a 400. I had discovered on here months back that I have a LP head. The only number on the head is 2-18-D. The gasket I have seems about 1/4 to 1/2" to wide. This engine is on a 54 super M which complicates finding the right one.

Thanks.

From the gaskets I see online they say for gas and lp but mine is clearly off more in the radius ends than I'm comfortable with.

All engines not diesel in a M to 450 use the same valve cover gasket no matter what head number. Head is newer than the 400 with a feb. 18-58 date code.

dont matter all the same gasket. if its a cork gasket it may need soaking to fit. and are you gluing it down with high tack sealer to hold it in place.

Yes and a 450 used a 281 engine and a 400 originally came with 264 on block. Most times the head number for those is under the valve cover near center. If you look toward front from the 281 you should find the block date code between side cover and head gasket surface. Around center area front to back on block. Can find C-281 replacement blocks in SM tractors but not as common to have the head change also on those.

I thought so too, but it turns out that it's just because the gasket is a big rectangle with no support in the middle, so it flops everywhere and acts like its too wide.

If you get the gasket surface on the head clean and use a smear of permatex to hold the gasket in place, you can arrange it to fit. Not gobs, just a smear.
