Run away Char-Lynn steering

The short story: Started the Super M-TA after a complete rebuild and the steering wheel tried to go full left after the Char-Lynn got oil pressure. . Shut it off. Started again and it tried to go full right. Does it every time. Neart broke my arm. Model# S 100 F.Took it apart and I can't see anything that has witness marks or needs to be indexed.Internals are in great shape. Pretty much only assembles one way. What in the world did I do wrong? This would roll the tractor if it happened at speed :-(

i have some manuals at the shop, i can look tuesday to see what is in the troubleshooting section.

Complete rebuild? Did you actually replace any hard parts? I had the one on my M apart took the case bolts out with the 12 point heads. Marked all the components for proper indexing for reassembly. Pulled the input cap off to drill and thread a couple new mounting holes due to the originals being broke out. Replaced the square cut shaft seal orings in the input and output caps and reassembled it per my marks. Works perfectly. The thing that amazed me is the fact that the steel segments had no orings or gaskets---?? The machined finish of the parts seals the hydraulic pressure. I never disassembled the main components, because another guy told me he bought a new one and took it apart to reindex the oil connection ports. He said it never worked right again. So yes I think they are very picky units as far a proper assembly goes.

As far as rebuild on the Char-Lynn,it only leaked around the shafts so all the 0-rings were replaced. The only thing that could possibly be installed wrong is the #12 shaft. It has shorter splines on one end. All the spools and plates have concentric hole patterns. The centering springs fit correctly only one way with the cut outs towards the sleeve. Beats me :-(

If it is anything like a Danfoss steering unit, and it looks like it is, you have got parts 9 & 11 miss-timed. On a Danfoss the groove at the top of shaft 9 MUST be aligned across 2 valleys of the inner rotor of 11 or the steering wheel will 'motor' Touch steering wheel on the outside only with the palms of your hands, they do not always motor straight away and the steering wheel must be moved to make it start to happen, you can also get a situation where the steering will motor uncontrollably from lock to lock.

It's indexed wrong. I can't recall exactly, but btdt. I can't recall if I found the fix online or someone here helped me. I think it was here. Boy, when you started it she would break your arm in a second. It's like they are possessed.

That was years ago. I have used it many comfortable hours since then!

Wait, it's coming back to me. Someone here sent me a scan of the book to read I think...

I hate getting old.
