4490 powershift. Gone through 200 hours ago. Driving today and push in clutch to hear clattering/hammering from tranny. Can go through all gears and powershift fine but clatters with clutch in and in reverse. Not finding anything in case service manual like what I'm experiencing

Nedd, not ignoring your post but was hoping Rod would jump in first, when the clutch pedal is depressed C4 activates and stops the planetary drum, the planetary gears are running full speed and my first thought is a planetary gear/ bearing failure. My thoughts are still that but was considering why there is no noise in 1 and 2 powershift as the planetaries are active in those two ranges and I would think some noise would be present there. Certainly your noise is mechanical and I would not run it till it is fixed, worse case is the complete planetary housing and gears, drum and sun gear. this stuff is getting harder to find and not cheap. That's my thoughts but will wait on an opinion from Rod. He is active in this stuff and I'm retired over 7 yrs already.

I think Mel hit the nail on the head. The noise is mechanical and coming from within the drum. The noise is caused from something getting in the planetary gears. When you hear the noise the damage is done but you should discontinue using the tractor. That sucks and can be expensive but thankfully you should be able to acquire the parts needed. Rod.

Thanks guys. When I went through the planetaries I had to replace the main input shaft and one small gear due to a chipped tooth. Replaced bearings and seals in the powershift and clutches for c1. Did not see what chipped tooth originally but I bet it did it again. To get it to load and move I had to run it a little. It actually doesn't hammer or clatter anymore but the whining from the planetaries when clutch is pushed in is slightly louder. Chipped tooth probably fell out of the groove. I'm going to pull it apart this summer and will post what I find. I'm betting I'll need all or almost all planetaries and drum. I think the 90 series are the same except the input shaft. Thanks guys
