Case VAI transmission

I brought home a new to me 1950 case VAI this afternoon. It has sat outside for a good while. Unfortunately the transmission is locked up. I tried to remove the top (shifter) cover but it will not come off. It is loose now but something inside is holding it. It appears that the middle fork is rearward. From what I can see of the shaft the gears slide on it is rusty. I am assuming that is why I cant get it out of gear. The shifter is not in the correct place for 1st gear and moves around somewhat. I think it is only the shaft that moves the shift fork that is preventing the shift cover from coming off.

Is it possible to disassemble the shift mechanism while still on the tractor? Also any other advice for getting into the transmission.

Thanks,
Lee

Try sliding a piece of flat stock in there to push the fork, see if it is free to move. Otherwise the fork rails can be under the housing edge and you may be able to side them back or forward by pushing on the forks enough to lift the cover.

I tried using a long screw driver to move the fork and bent the screwdriver it in the process. The fork will move on the shifter side but is hung up on the gear side. I assume it is the rusty shaft preventing
the gears from sliding.

I've free up transmissions by draining the old oil ad water out and then filling them up with ATF and let them soak for while. But if you fine you need a transmission I have one or 2 laying aroud

Update,
I was able to use a screw driver and wiggle the gears into neutral. However after getting the cover off there is no good news. The transmission is mostly full of water, the oil slinger is missing all of its teeth and the gears are pretty rusty. Also the clutch seems to be stuck as well as the motor. If any one is interested in a parts tractor or a deep project near southern IN Ive got one. I will admit I didnt pay much and bought it mostly for the wheel weights.

Thanks,
Lee
