Case 930 6 speed or 8 speed

I am looking at a 930 diesel comfort king standard with a 6 speed transmission that will be in an auction soon. I know from my research that they made 8 speeds in this model also. Of the two transmissions, which is the more reliable ? I will be using it for field work like pulling a disk or culti-mulcher.

The 6 spd is likely the most trouble free driveline ever made. They have chain drive instead of bull gears and pinions. Also have a wet clutch which is about impossible to destroy. Most would say they are better for tillage than the 8 spd and have better tillage speeds. They were designed for heavy tillage and shine for that.

6 speed 930s is all you saw out here. For strictly field work they work fine. For anything else there are better options.

This six speed 930, one of 4 I own, is a hand clutch tractor and my sprayer tractor...

Depends on what you want it to do,, if you are only going to use it for drawbar work a 6 speed is a fine machine,, if you need 3pt hitch a 8 speed is the one you have to buy,, both are very good tractors, they made more 930's than any other model, the 6 speed does have more rim pull due tot he fact the chain drive takes less hp to put the power to the ground,

How big a disk are you planning on? What use has the tractor been put thru?

The unit you are looking at is not new and depending on the use it has seen, it may not function to expectations.
