Hello all, brand new to the forum. I'm looking at buying a 1960 Case 500. it's a non runner, owner says engine is seized. What should I look for other than the obvious...windows in the block...lol. I'm pretty strong mechanically so I know to check leaks, broken bits, linkages etc. If the engine is rebuildable, are they expensive to do? I can handle the rebuild myself including some machining. Any advice is appreciated. TIA.
Cheers, Mark

A 1960 500 would have been built in Rock Island and referred to as a small frame B
series 500 tractor. There was also an earlier Racine built 6 cylinder large frame 500.
The one you refer to should have a serial# plate on the side panel covering the fuel
tank. It should have 511B or 510B for model. The 11s were row crops, and 10s were
utility with non adjustable axles. There were several choices for transmissions, and
PTO and eagle hitch were options/ deletes. The engines were 164cu.in. dry sleeve
engines. Contact John Saeli to find out about parts availability. His number is three

Thank you for the info.

Thanks for the info. The only info I found was quite different. This one has non adj. front axle and a front end loader. It has a six cyl...supposidy 407 cu/in. tried to insert a pic but cant figure out how. i'll ad it to my profile if I can.[/img]

Most of the parts are easy to
get, the sleeves for that
engine are no longer
available tho. However John
Seali can get them for you
and I think Don Livingston
can also. Both are posters
here and both are great to
work with.

I was thinking that too. I found that 53-57 seems to be the big six cyl. The site i was on said it was a 6.2L rated at 55hp and 402Ft/Lbs. I guess i'll know Friday...going to pick it up.

Thank you all for the information. It is I believe a 1954 Case 500 with the original loader. It's in pretty darn good shape for being 65 years old. Fenders are kinda beat up but that's no surprise. According to the previous owner it ran and drove before he had it. He went to pick it up and is was locked up. so maybe a leaking injector?? or he's full of crap. Seems to have all the original decals but they're buried in a coat of paint, not sure if I can rescue them. Needs a pretty major overhaul to bring it back, lots of wear in the moving bits. Don't know if I'll go that far.
