I replaced the big clutch shaft bearing on my CC Case. Bearing was still good but I have the engine off anyway so I just replaced it because I was in there. I was told by experienced Case guys that I need to set the backlash and check the gear marking between the clutch shaft gear and the belt pulley shaft gear.
I have the service manual and it says the backlash should be set between.008” and .012”. I have a magnetic base dial indicator on the belt pulley shaft gear but with the engine out, the clutch shaft doesn’t have support on the front to hold it in a neutral position. I need to hold the clutch shaft from moving but each time I get a different reading. The slightest pressure to the side of the shaft changes the reading I get. I didn’t replace the belt pulley shaft bearings, just the clutch shaft bearings.
Once I set the backlash, I then need to check the gear marking (fwd/aft adjustment). But that will be done with gear marking compound - the service manual says to use a special Case tool to set this but it only gives a pet number of the tool, no details of what it is. Any ideas on backlash setting?
